The rapidly increasing elderly population in South East Asia region including Myanmar call for Age friendly health care system. In response to ever growing elderly population healthcare professional needs more knowledge, concepts, and skills in elderly care to meet the health care needs of older people. Geriatric Medicine is the one which is specialized subject for that. To provide quality health care services to the elderly, primary care physicians or General practitioner required principles and concepts of Geriatric medicine as well as common geriatric problems.
Ministry of Health and Sports set up Geriatric ward in Yangon General Hospital in 2016. Training of Medical profession in health care of the elderly began since 1996 and it is ongoing.
It is appropriate and relevant to disseminate Geriatric medicine to GPs starting from now.
